The aspiring National Coordinator of the Nasara of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for calm within the rank and file of the Moslem wing of the party as it embarks on the exercise of electing polling station executives for victory 2020.
Sulemanan Alhassan Atakpo made the call for calm in a statement released in Accra after the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party announced modalities for the commencement of the election of polling station executives across the country.
According to him, members of the Moslem wing feel slighted by the decision of the party not to allow the wing to representatives at the polling station election when all wings in the party have representation at the polling station level.
He said the youth wing and the women’s wing of the party have representation at the polling station level and why not Nasara which is equally a wing of the party.
He explain that in spite of the fact that members have been denied the right to vote for their leaders at the polling station level, they should exercise restraint as well-meaning personalities of the wing table the matter with the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
Even though the decision not allow members of the wing to vote at the polling station level is unfortunate, he called on members to exercise restraint and fully participate in the exercise to foster unity in the rank and file of the party going into 2020.
He said it is unfortunate all other wings in the party are voting rights at the lowest level of the party and members of the Nasara wing have been denied that right.
He said the decision as it stands now clearly spelt out that non-members of the wing may end up voting for coordinators of the Nasara wing at the Constituency levels if the party is done with the polling station elections.
He took the opportunity to appeal to the NEC of the party to take a second look at the decision that denies members of the wing the right to vote in an election at the lowest level of the party organization.
If wings like the women’s and youth have representation at the local levels of the party why not Nasara wing he questions.
He was hopeful the denial of voting right at the local level will not affect members’ participation in the exercise of electing officers to steer the affairs of the party for the next four years.
As fairness demand all wings like any other wing must be recognized at the local level as well as the top adding that as the stands non-members of the wing will end up choosing leaders of the wing at the constituency levels of the party.
Now that there is a whole ministry created by the president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to steer the development of zongo communities across the country is the time the wing must have a strong voice at the local levels he maintained.
