ECG disconnects Accra Sports Stadium

The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), has cut power supply to the Accra Sports Stadium as part of a mass disconnection exercise of defaulters in Accra.

The Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the National Sports Authority, Frederica Mensah-Davies confirmed that power supply to the national stadium was cut on Tuesday.
The Accra Sports Stadium in 2015 owed the ECG bills worth GH¢240,000 and were placed on a payment plan of GH¢24,000 per month to enable them clear the debt.
However, the decision of ECG staff to reclaim debts owed it by state institutions appears to have put paid to that agreement.
She said, “We are not the only ones who are owing, we have payed our sum for this month as part of the agreement but they (ECG) have asked us to pay a bit more for them to reconnect us.
“We are hopeful that we will be able to raise the sum required by close of day to restore the power,” Madam Mensah-Davies added.
A national athlete who spoke on condition of anonymity said, sportsmen and sportswomen were now unable to train at the DG Hathiramani Hall of the Stadium beyond 6:00 pm because of darkness.
“Most of the national athletes are in the security services and we do a lot of our training after work, so we are very worried about the situation.
“As athletes, we can’t do much we can only pray that it will be fixed soon.”
The facility is the second national stadium to be taken of the national grid in two weeks after the newly constructed Cape Coast Sports Stadium was disconnected for owing the ECG GH¢719,792.46.
