The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) is saddened by the recent air disaster that led to the death of players and officials of Brazilian football club Chapecoense and journalists accompanying the team.
Players and officials of the Brazilian side numbering 40 and 22 journalists died alongside several others in a plane crash on Monday evening on their way from Brazil to Colombia through Bolivia.
According to the reports only five people survived the crash.
A statement from the secretariat described the death of players, officials and
Journalists as a major shock and heart wrecking to the entire global sporting fraternity.
It said the unfortunate incident has landed the world into a state of shock and mourning and the Association is not an excerption.
“Despite the distance between Ghana and Brazil, we are touched by the disaster because as sports journalists and stakeholders in sports, we could find ourselves in a similar situation due to the nature of our work.” It stated.
The statement urged the Brazilian side, the Football Federation of Brazil and the entire nation to remain firm in the wake of the unfortunate incident.
“We also call on the families, friends and loved ones of the victims to to be consoled by the fact that, God remains our source of strength and inspiration.” It noted.
ACF Chapecoense from the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina had been due to play the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional.
The competition is a South American equivalent of the Europa League or CAF’S Confederation Cup- the continent’s No2 international club competition.
