Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Union Movement, Reverend Christian Kwabena Andrews, popularly known as Osofo Kyiri Abosom, has said that the operations of illegal small scale mining popularly known as Galamsey will be rampant if he is given the nod as President.

According to him, Ghana has so many natural resources to go waste and as such his Government will champion the excavation of these natural resources.

In an exclusive interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, he noted: “Galamsey will be more in my tenure. The Government of Ghana, under my tenure will do more Galamsey but we will plant more trees”.

When questioned on how he will restore the land after the mining had destroyed the land, he answered: “the mind and knowledge given to me by God will be manifested when I come into power”.

He furthered that this venture will solve the unemployment issues in the country as he posits that about ninety-nine percent (99%) are currently unemployed.

Illegal mining, better known as “galamsey”, remains a very serious threat to Ghanaians and the environment. The effects of the chemicals used in processing the gold, such as arsenic and mercury, are well documented.

President Akufo-Addo placed a ban on small-scale and illegal mining as a way to release the pressure on the lands and water bodies as farmlands were destroyed, and rivers and streams that provided potable water and fish were contaminated.
