2020 Election Petition: We believe in the Supreme Court - Alex Segbefia

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it believes the Supreme Court will make a just decision on its petition on infringements of electoral laws at the December 7 polls.

The NDC indicates it has various options to seek redress against the Electoral Commission (EC) but decided to petition the court because of the trust they have in it.

Member of the NDC’s legal team, Alex Segbefia stated, “We have different options to register our displeasure and could’ve undertaken demonstrations but went to court. We know the courts will arrive at a just decision and that is why we have decided to go to court”.

He made this comment in an interview with Samuel Eshun host of the Happy Morning Show aired on e.TV Ghana and Happy 98.9 FM.

The former Minister indicated that the nature and timeframe of the NPP’s 2012 election petition varies from that of the NDC “and if we didn’t have confidence in obtaining justice, we wouldn’t have gone to court”, he reiterated.

On his accord, the International Community will be keenly monitoring proceedings, making it difficult for justice to be interfered with. “We believe going to court will give us the remedy we need”, he stated.

The politician admitted some members of his party have reservations about the justices of the Supreme Court “and there are also difficulties with court decisions but we can only critique them after the judgement is pronounced”.

He was quick to add that just as judgements of lower courts are contested, so will the NDC contest the judgment of the Supreme Court should it suspect any anomalies.

“The fact that somebody is a judge doesn’t mean she/he gets it right all the time. If you make a decisions which is not the norm, you only create problems for yourself and raises some perceptions you cannot run from. It will be quite interesting to rig a judgement when such a case is brought before you”, Alex motioned.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently in the Supreme Court challenging the 2020 presidential election results to ensure the Electoral Commission (EC) complies with the electoral laws, contrary to information that it is seeking to have the results overturned in its favour.
