The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) says its members are more than ready to go back to school for the new academic year.

According to them, teachers being at home for some ten (10) months after schools were closed in March to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has not in any way affected their competencies and efficiencies.

The General Secretary for the association, Thomas Musah noted the association of teachers is a professional body which does not take their work for granted and will keep providing students with quality tuition.

When asked by Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show if teachers had lost their touch, Thomas Musah shot down the idea saying, “It cannot be said that the teachers have become rusty or forgotten how to teach. Teachers are professionals and are ever ready to teach”.

His only concern was the availability of teaching materials for the new academic year which would either affect teaching and learning positively or negatively

“The materials needed for teachers to deliver should be provided soon so they can deliver as professionals”, he mentioned.

President Akufo-Addo on March 15, announced the closure of all schools in the country from March 16, along with a ban on public gatherings when Ghana confirmed her first two positive COVID-19 cases.

Second-year students in junior and senior high schools were however allowed back in school on October 5, 2020 to complete the 2019/20 academic year

However, President Akufo-Addo in his 21st COVID-19 update announced basic schools in Ghana will reopen on Friday, January 15, 2021.

The President also stated that first-year Senior High School students will start classes from March 10, 2021, while their seniors in SHS 2 and SHS 3 will return to school from January 18, 2021 with tertiary institutions reopening from January 9, 2021.
