2020 Election Petition: High probability of falsehood in NDC's evidence - NPP legal team

Legal Committee Member of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) election petition team, Nana Adwoa Adobea Asante has expressed her excitement at the witness statement given by the ex-President John Dramani Mahama’s 3rd witness in the election petition.

She indicated that the evidence provided by Rojo Mettle-Nunoo proves that the election petition challenging the legitimacy of President Akufo-Addo’s 2nd term in office is based on falsehood.

“We were happy about what Rojo said and equally happy about how our cross-examination went. It is not about the number of witnesses you call to the stand but the materiality of the evidence you present. And it proves yesterday that the evidence provided by the witness of the NDC’s 2020 presidential candidate is highly probable to be untrue”, she said.

According to the lawyer, the election petition by the opposition and its flagbearer is all in a desperate attempt to maintain relevance in the media after the election.

Explaining why the NPP being the first respondent is not willing to call its witnesses to the stand in the election petition, she stated, “We believe that the evidence the petitioner has provided is not enough for us to call our witnesses to punch holes in them.

And we are surprised the petitioner objected to our need not to call on our witnesses. The petitioner should have been happy and they should not have been worried we did not call our witnesses who would’ve punched holes in their statements”.

Speaking in an interview with Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show, Nana Adjoa stated, “From the onset, we felt this petition is devoid of substance and our strategy was made with that thinking”.

Lawyers for the EC and President Akufo-Addo indicated that they do not intend to open their defence or call witnesses.

Initially, the defendants had indicated that they will call one witness each but following Rojo Mettle-Nunoo’s cross-examination during Monday’s hearing, they told the court they have rescinded that decision.
