The Public Relations Officer of the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) Kwame Frimpong has debunked claims that the pulling down of the abandoned 45-year-old Maternity and Baby Unit (MBU) building project at the KATH in Kumasi to pave way for a new structure will disrupt their work.

According to him, he is sure that, the method that will be used in demolishing the building will have less impact on the surrounding structures.

Speaking on the Happy Morning Show (HMS) with Samuel Eshun, Kwame Frimpong said “The structures that are closer to the building are the cancer treatment centre, family medicine centre and a military structure. They don’t share the wall directly with the project building but is about proximity. The demolishing will not disrupt our work.”

The 45-year-old structure, meant to accommodate 750 beds, lecture halls, restaurants, operation theatres among others, has been found to be too weak to accommodate all the equipment and the number of people expected to use the facility.

Following a number of structural analyses conducted on the building, which was started in 1976 but has since been abandoned, it has been recommended that it should be demolished for a new one to be built in its stead.
