Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam, has expressed his disappointment at the Ghana Police Service following the claim that the Obuasi Police are aware of the actions of some gun-wielding boys who were captured in a viral video last week.

Following the attack on a bullion van at James Town last Monday, three gun-wielding young men were seen in a viral video that made rounds on social media leading to the conclusion these armed men were robbers. However, the trio in another video denied being robbers while stating that the Obuasi Police were aware of their role as security personnel for galamsey sites.

Andy Kankam, reacting to this occurrence shared that the loopholes in the Police Service as identified in this situation, paves way for criminals to become brazen in their conduct.

He told Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show: “They came out to say they curse the media for spreading the news that they are armed robbers and that even the Obuasi police know that they are not armed robbers and that they protect galamsey sites. Does it mean that the Obuasi police know that they are involved in an illegality?

In the first place, galamsey is a criminal offence so who engaged them? That is where I believe that the police must step up their game. We must know people who engaged these young people to protect galamsey sites”.
Andy further advised the Police to take steps to ensure that there is enough intelligence gathering and issuance of an arrest to ensure that this issue is quickly resolved.

“We must know engaging the services of this guys. The IGP and his men must arrest these guys. I like the swoop they are doing now. But they must engage in intelligence gathering”, he added.
