Ghanaian youth partaking in the #FixTheCountry demonstration today, Wednesday, August 4, 2021 may have thrown all caution to the wind and risk their safety as they march the streets of the capital.

Conveners of the #FixTheCountry campaign prior to the demonstration pledged to adhere to COVID-19 safety protocols to the strictest levels but that is far from the reality.

Pictures from the demonstration show participants of the campaign packed together with little regard to the social distancing protocol, with some wearing their nose masks improperly.

Police Officers assigned to escort demonstrators have expressed worry over the disregard of COVID-19 safety protocols as reported by Happy98.9FM’s Joseph Nii Ankrah.

Marshals from the #FixTheCountry campaign whose work is to liaise with the police for a peaceful demonstration also admit things have got out of hand.

A marshal identified as Gladstorm said, “things have gotten out of hand and the police are helping us sort them out. We made proper arrangements but we have been overwhelmed by the crowd that showed up today.”

Background

Conveners for #FixTheCountry campaign, today, Wednesday, August 4, 2021, converge on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra to embark on their much-talked about protest.

The group says the protest is to put pressure on the government to address the country’s numerous challenges, including youth unemployment.

The group served notice of the demonstration to register its dissatisfaction with the current cost of living in the country.

The August 4 date was arrived at after an Accra High Court dismissed an application by the police seeking to injunct the protest, using COVID-19 restrictions as an excuse.
