Attend to doctors’ over looming strike – Gov’t told

The Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health has prompted the government to turn its attention to medical officers who have threatened to go on strike over their poor conditions of service.

The National Vice Chairperson of the Coalition, Mr. Ninsau Kwesi Darku-Alazar, stated that ignoring the medical officers will be disastrous for the country, as we are already struggling with cases of COVID-19.

He told Samuel Eshun on the Happy Morning Show: “Doctors are threatening to go on strike in two months if their conditions of service are not improved. Even at a time where Ghana is struggling and battling with the situation at hand, they are still not being treated fairly.

So, we will plead with the government to tackle the issue before it gets as serious as the situation of the university teachers. The government must sit with the GHS to resolve the issue”.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chair has encouraged intensive education by the media and NGOs to sensitize the Ghanaian public on the need to adhere to the COVID-19 protocols.

The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has given the government up to September 30, 2021, to settle outstanding arrears to its members or face a strike.

In a communiqué issued after a National Executive Council meeting, the Association said the strike would begin from October 1, 2021, with the suspension of Outpatient-services.

“Withdrawal of all in-patient services will begin the following week (effective Friday 8th October 2021) if all the issues are still not completely resolved,” the communiqué explained further.

The complete withdrawal of services would then begin from October 15.
