Youth Leader of the Economic Fighters League and a convener of the #FixTheCountry movement, Ernesto Yeboah, says he is not surprised that President Akufo-Addo does not support any calls for the 1992 constitution to be reviewed or amended at this time.

Ernesto Yeboah was of the view, no politician will support the amendment or review of the 1992 constitution because politicians are “beneficiaries of this rotten system”.

The activist shared this view during an interview with Happy FM’s Don Prah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ show when he said: “There is no politician; a beneficiary under this rotten system who will agree to a change of the constitution. So, it is no news that the President does not support the call for a new constitution.

Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu will not agree to a change of constitution. The speaker of parliament will not agree that the constitution be changed. Haruna Iddrisu will not agree to a change of constitution. This is because they are all beneficiaries of this rotten system. Go and check how much the speaker of parliament earns every month. He is given 350 million old Ghana cedis as salary. So why will he agree to the change? This constitution is the best constitution for them. This is because it enables broad daylight stealing and plunder of the wealth of this country”.

Ernesto called on journalists and all Ghanaians to voice out for a new constitution as he believes that a new constitution will “serve the new terms and conditions on which we are going to build the new future for ourselves”.

President Akufo-Addo, when confronted with the issue of reviewing or amending the constitution said that the current constitution is one that has assisted the durability of the 4th Republic, which happens to be the longest one ever. As such, any attempt to review it should be done with the outmost care.

The President said he feels very strongly about that point and that is why “I have not lent my support to the idea of this wholesale review of the constitution.”
