2022 World Cup playoff: Ghana, Nigeria draw in first leg

The Deputy National Organizer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Madi Jibril has stated that Ghana’s draw against Nigeria in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup Qualifiers has saved the country from a huge economic loss.

According to him, qualifying to the World Cup in Qatar might lead to untold financial loss to the nation.

In an interview with Happy98.9FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the Epa Hoa Daben political talk show, he noted “Ghana not winning the match against Nigeria has saved our economy. If we had won the match you would’ve heard of the outrageous amounts and resources used to organize the game and even prepare the team for the game,”

Assessing the performance of the Black Stars, he described it as substandard. “Our preparation shows we cannot call upon unprepared people to fight with people well prepared. The game was between the two countries and their rivalry, and had nothing to do with the tactics of the coaches. We cannot even assess the performance of the team because the game was based on a long standing rivalry. Comparing it to other games, you will realize the true strength of the Black Stars.”

He stressed that a win from the Black Stars last Friday match would have caused a repetition of the many sports scandals involving the misappropriation of funds and many other suspicious activities.

“ if Ghana had scored a goal in the match, they would’ve said a lot of money was spent in winning the match and that’s the truth”.

Ghana and Nigeria clash in the second leg of the 2022 World Cup playoff match at the Moshood Abiola Sports Stadium in Abuja on Tuesday, March 29, 2022.

The game will decide which team qualify’s for the 2022 World Cup to be staged in Qatar.
