Dr. Florence Koryo Akumiah, specialized healthcare practitioner at the International Medicine Department, Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital has explained that, the World Health Day is earmarked to intensify the awareness of health condition to people around the globe.

In an interview on ‘Happy Morning Show’ with Samuel Eshun, the medical practitioner disclosed that, data gathered over the years enable medical researchers ascertain the most predominant disease within a time frame and also give them hindsight to its prevention.

According to her, World Health Day is geared to educate people on prevailing diseases and suggested some prevent ways to control such diseases.

“Over the days, we gather data and based on those statistics we get to know the prevailing disease within a period of time. These statistics make us analyze the number of persons feared dead or suffering from a particular disease. It also helps us know what and how to go about such issues. That is why, there is World Health Day, so that after all these we should be able to make the public know. Although health is a global issue, individuals can help us to control diseases. So, if we disseminate the information to the public, they’d also know what they can do to help preserve their own health.

Speaking on the theme for this year’s World Health Day dubbed: “Our world Our Health”, Dr. Florence Koryo Akumiah stressed on the impact of climate issues on both our environment and our health. She stressed that we tend to pay little attention to some environmental activities which affect us in one way or other.

“The issue of global warming and pollution affect our environment and human beings do not exist in isolation. We live in environment in some polluted environment those things would eventually affect us. You may think that it doesn’t it doesn’t directly affect us, like people mining far from your neighborhood but then the water runs through to join the main pool of water and eventually contaminate your drinking water. People are also using fertilizers that are not approved and buy most of these produce without knowing this,” she said.

Dr Florence Koryo Akumiah (MBChB, MSc Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine) is a Medical Doctor affiliated to the National Cardiothoracic Centre, currently an Internal Medicine Specialist trainee at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital with interest in Cardiology and Preventive Medicine. She is also the Vice President of Ghana Association of Doctors in Residency (GADOR). She is passionate about health education and advocacy, as well as capacity building, as progressive drivers of disease prevention and health promotion and preservation.
