The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has directed the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to postpone all games involving Hearts of Oak for the next seven days.

A disease outbreak hit the Phobians camp last week before their mid-week game against Bibiani Gold Stars at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Several players of the team were hospitalized and missed the game.

The club requested for the game against Gold Stars to be postponed which was rejected by the GFA.

Hearts of Oak were able to raise a team for the game which they won by a lone goal.

After checks conducted by the medical authorities, it has been revealed that there was an outbreak of influenza A subtype H3N2.

The Ghana Health Service has recommended that all matches involving Hearts of Oak should be postponed in order to help the players recover fully and also avoid a possible spread.

In a statement, the GHS has directed the GFA to, “ Suspend all football matches involving Accra Hearts of Oak for the next seven days, Ensure the strict isolation of all footballers and staff of Hearts of Oak showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose etc.

“They are to liaise with the Greater Accra Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service to support Hearts of Oak institute appropriate prevention and control measures for Influenza A subtype H3N2. Support the Ghana Health Service to conduct random tests of footballers of clubs not currently affected by the outbreak to ascertain the extent of the outbreak.

The GFA has been tasked to ensure strict adherence and report any case of breach of the protocols to the Ghana Health Service.
