Today In Sports History: Great Olympics thrash MMM in Africa Club Championship

On this day 30 May 1971 (Exactly 51 years ago today) Great Olympics banged in seven goals without reply in their African Clubs Championship match against the champion club of Malagasy, Mpiansa Mpianatra Miaraka (MMM).

The visitors were poor and people began to wonder how they managed to beat the Dade Boys in the first leg.

It was a one-sided affair and if Olympics had exploited well the spaces in the defence, they could have scored about 15 goals on the day.

The talking point of the tie was how Tanzanian referee Ndimbo interpreted some of the Laws of the game.

As early as the third minute he awarded a strange indirect freekick against MMM, right in the box, after the goalie had seemingly been unduly threatened by on rushing Peter Lamptey. Jones Attoquayefio scored beautifully from the gifted free frick.

Even though with the game under their control it took Olympics over thirty minutes before getting their second goal.

Jones connected home a free-kick from Boye at a position which appeared offside.

However Peter Lamptey drove home a Cobblah cross in a goalmouth tustle to register Olympics first genuine goal. And just on the stroke of half time, Robert Hammond put Cobblah through to bring the score to 4-0.

With a goal harvest in sight, Olympics attacked in burts on resumption.

In the 52nd minute, the referee allowed another bad goal when Jones scored with his left foot flying menacingly together with the ball into the net.

The visitors began to show visible signs of tiredness after this goal as Olympics continued to punch holes on their defence. But strangely enough the referee became vigilant overnight and began to award unnecessary offsides against Olympics.

Hammond and Lamptey however added two more goals in the 55th and 69th minutes respectively to give Olympics this big victory- the highest since the competition was introduced in 1965.

Incidentally it was also the highest score in an international match at the Accra Stadium since Ghana thrashed Nigeria 7-0 in 1955.

This remained as the biggest winning margin for any Ghanaian club in Caf Inter Club competitions until 1995 when Obuasi Goldfields (now Ashgold) beat NPA Anchors of Liberia 8-1 of the record.

To date, the 8 goals scored by Ashgold remains the most goals scored by a Ghanaian club in a single CAF Inter – Club Competition match , but the biggest winning margin of 7 goals in a single match was equalled by Asante Kotoko when they defeated Sony Ela Nguema of Equatorial Guinea 7-0 in 2013
