Managing Editor of the Custodian Newspaper, Awudu Mahama, has expressed his dismay over poor road conditions in Ghana, especially the capital.

In an interview with Happy98.9 FM’s Samuel Eshun on the “Editors’ Take” edition on the Happy Morning Show, Awudu Mahama bitterly shared his experiences plying roads with “huge” potholes and no street lights.

“Road conditions in this country is a serious matter we need to tackle. Just about a week ago, I used the motorway and the road is terrible. I formerly used the motorway but decided to avoid that route about a year ago, but this time something happened and I had no choice but to pass there.

Something urgently has to be done about that road. I don’t know which people are in charge of supervising road construction in the country. We have the Ministry of Roads and Highways; we have the Urban Roads and we’re not even talking about feeder roads because most roads in the Accra city here are urban roads.

He reiterated that the issues of road conditions must be taken very seriously and ought to be addressed in time. According to him, the authorities in charge need to improve the situation to avoid further casualties on our roads.

“Let’s look at Dome Kwabenya from the Atomic roundabout to Taifa which is a double lane and a big constructed road. But every turn you’ll make on that road you meet huge potholes. There are about 3 turns and you’ll meet huge potholes on every turn. I can’t understand whether our authorities use these roads. The road is a big one and clearly constructed so it’s not fair to experience these things.

I’ve always been talking about street lighting in Accra and this is a death trap for drivers. Just about four days ago around the Trade Fair area to the road that leads to the Labadi beach hotel, the stretch on the Beach Road through to the Accra Post Office and the Mortuary is pitch black. This is serious and in many places in Accra, meanwhile we’re supposed to be paying for them and people are in charge of this so what are they doing,” he quizzed.
