Former Hearts of Oak midfielder Esme Mends, has disclosed that he never saw football as a career he wanted to pursue during his youthful age before actually entering the sports.

Speaking in an interview, he reiterated the fact that, age is a major contributive factor in playing football and is something one can not hold on to forever hence he is not convinced it is a career.

“I remember waking up this morning and feeling a pinch in my knee and all of a sudden I just felt old.
“But you look back and say it was just five or years six years ago I was very active, training hard daily and suddenly I don’t have that energy and strength no more”. He recalled.

He further went on to explain that he never wanted to play football and instead preferred education.

“My elder brother and a few friends influenced my decision to go into active football because they felt I was good at it.
“I really admired the style of play of Thomas Opoku and other players and I enjoyed watching them but I feared injuries as well till I was influenced by my elder brother and friends” He added.

Esme Mends featured five times for the Phobians whiles registering only one goal during his spell at the club.
