Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta has revealed that the National Cathedral is fully owned by the state.

According him, the “Attorney General issued an opinion on January 6, 2022 that the National Cathedral is a state owned company limited by guarantee under the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board”.

His revelations come on the back allegation levelled against him by the minority MPs in Parliament.

Appearing before a Committee set up by the Speaker of Parliament to probe allegations calling for his removal from office as Finance Minister, Mr. Ofori Atta stated that the proponent claiming that there has been some unconstitutional withdrawal from the consolidated fund implementing controversies of article 178 of the 1992 constitution supposedly for the National Cathedral is false.

He added that that withdrawal from the contingent fund was in existence before his appointment.

“Expenditures in respect with the National Cathedral we’re made from the contingent fund under the government obligation vault as has been the practice before my tenure. “

Some Members of the Majority Caucus in Parliament have called for the immediate dismissal of Ken Ofori-Atta as Minister for Finance by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Numbering about 80, the MPs who constitute a greater number of the Majority Caucus threatened to vote against all government businesses that will come before the House.
At a press conference addressed by the Asante Akyem North MP, Andy Appiah-Kubi, the MPs said Mr Ofori-Atta has ran the economy aground and must be shown the exit.
The National Cathedral of Ghana is a planned interdenominational Christian Cathedral scheduled to be built in Accra , the nations capital as part of Ghana’s 60th anniversary celebrations . The design for the Cathedral was unveiled by the president of Ghana , Nana Akufo Addo in March 2018.
The cathedral will be situated within 14 acres of newly landscaped gardens adjacent to Osu Cemetery. It will house a series of impressive chapels, a baptistery, a 5000-seat two-level auditorium, a grand central hall, music school, choir rehearsal, art gallery, shop and multi-use spaces.
The announcement of the Cathedral orchestrated a lot of criticisms from Ghanaians since they feel the economic hardships in the country should be tackled rather than building a Cathedral .
