Emmanuel Dasor runs today as Amponsah crashes out

There was no joy yesterday for Ghanaian athlete Janet Amponsah after failing to qualify for the second round of the women’s 200 metres race at the ongoing Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Amponsah finished in sixth position of Heat 4 in a time of 23.67 seconds and crashed out of the competition. It was a strong field for the 23-year-old Olympic debutante who had to contend with crack athletes such as Ivorian Marie-Joasee Ta Lou, who won the race in 22.31 seconds ahead of Jamaican sprints queen Elaine Thompson (22.63 sec) and Gina Luckenkemper of Germany (22.80 sec).
The 23-year-old Janet qualified for the event after running a personal best of 22.99 seconds at the Soga-Nana Memorial held in Cape Coast last month.
She will seek to make amends in the women’s 4×100 metres relay which takes place on Thursday where she is a key member of Ghana’s quartet to be selected from Gemma Acheampong, Beatrice Gyaman, Dorcas Gyimah, Persis William-Mensah, and Akua Obeng-Akrofi..
This afternoon at the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange, Emmanuel Kwame Dasor will attempt to go past the first round of the men’s 200m sprints.
The 20-year-old sprinter qualified for the Rio Games after running 20.49 seconds — his personal best and season’s best — at the Soga-Nana Memorial on July 8 in Cape Coast, having earlier run 20.89 seconds at a meet at Crossplex Arena in Birmingham, Alabama in February.
Tomorrow, John Ampomah takes his turn in the qualifying round of the men’s javelin competition.
