Patrick Vieira appointed Strasbourg manager

Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the manager of Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg on a three-year contract.

The 47-year-old former France star had been without a job since being sacked as the boss of Premier League side Crystal Palace in March.

Expressing his excitement about joining RC Strasbourg, Vieira said, “I am particularly happy to join Racing. I know the history and the identity of this club, the fervour it arouses, the importance it has for its region, which is a place of football and passion.”

The news comes after Chelsea’s owners recently agreed to acquire a majority stake in Strasbourg, who finished 15th in the French top flight last season, narrowly avoiding relegation by five points.

Vieira’s experience working in a multi-club group is not new. He previously coached Manchester City’s under-23s before taking charge of New York City FC, which is also part of the City Football Group.

Vieira will be taking over from Frederic Antonetti, 61, who successfully steered Strasbourg away from relegation last season but mutually agreed to part ways following the recent investment.

The Arsenal legend began his coaching career after retiring from playing with Manchester City in 2011.
