Gloria Sarkodie Addo, Counselling Psychologist and Senior Nursing Officer Institute of Counselling Pyschology- Ghana, has disclosed that most of the cases she handles are DNA related issues.

In an interview with Sammy Eshun on Happy 98.9 FM’s Happy Morning Show, she said, “Mistrust is the major reason people take DNA tests. I can confidently say that about 60% cases which come before me are DNA tests, and related to family issues. They all portray mistrust in relationships”.

According to her, counselors try as much as possible to create space for a non-judgmental environment for people to be able to speak their minds, feelings and concerns freely.

“Most people don’t even accept the counsel we give to them. They prefer to leave as soon as they find out they’re not responsible for the child. We believe that for someone to be able to speak their mind, feelings and concerns about paternity tests, counselors need to provide a calm environment for the person to feel free,” she said.

She also added that, such topics are sensitive and should not be discussed anywhere hence, why the need for calm and patience.

“You can’t say such things anywhere because it’s very disheartening and a big blow when it comes out that the child you think is yours isn’t. Especially if you’ve taken care of the person till he or she is now old enough and can make decisions for him or herself,” she stated.

She added that aside biology, one can be a father through bonding, mentoring and guidance.
