Green Ghana: No one has 100% control over seedlings survival – Forestry Commission

Joyce Ofori Kwafo, Manager of Corporate Affairs and Media Relations Unit at the Ghana Forestry Commission has shed light on the progress of the Green Ghana initiative ahead of this year’s exercise.

The initiative which aims to restore and preserve Ghana’s forest cover has seen significant efforts in recent years. However, the Field Assessment Report for 2022 reveals a slightly lower survival rate for seedlings compared to the previous year.

According to the report, last year’s seedlings recorded a 72% survival rate , as compared to a higher rate of 81% in 2021. While this decline raises questions about the effectiveness of the initiative, Madam Joyce Ofori Kwafo emphasized that it is still too early to determine the overall impact of the project, as it has only been three years since its inception.

Speaking to Happy 98.9 FM, Joyce Kwafo highlighted the complications involved in achieving a 100% growth rate for the seedlings, stating that despite implementing all appropriate measures, complete control over their success remains elusive.

“Though adequate measures were put in place to ensure the survival of all seedlings planted, a number of external factors account for the survival rate, including rainfall patterns, possible bushfires, soil fertility, seedlings transportation and other indicators, play crucial roles in ensuring optimal growth. Even with the best efforts, a certain level of unpredictability is inherent in such initiatives,” Joyce Ofori Kwafo stressed.

She announced that 10 million seedlings are expected to be planted this year. This massive planting endeavour demonstrates the commitment of the Ghana Forestry Commission and the government to safeguarding and rehabilitating the nation’s forest resources.

The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor earlier this year announced that the 2023 edition of the Green Ghana Day will be held on Friday, June 9 2023, under the theme “Our Forests, Our Health”.

The Green Ghana initiative launched in 2021, has received widespread support from various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public.
