Government, operating through the Ghana Education Service Trust Fund (GETFund), has awarded new scholarships to a total of 4,279 tertiary students across various Colleges and Universities.

The awardees cut across the respective programmes of undergraduate and postgraduate studies.

In comparison to last year’s figure of 2,704 student recipients in 2022, this year, 2023, marks a substantial increase of 63% in successful applicants.

The recipients encompass both Postgraduate and Undergraduate programs. Among these, 1,963 students (46%) are pursuing studies in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), while 2,316 students (54%) are engaged in Humanities.

Out of the awardees, 2,951 are enrolled in Diploma or Degree-related courses. Additionally, 1,321 students are undertaking Masters or PhD programs within both Private and Public tertiary institutions.

The fund as of August 2, 2023, has paid the total sum of GH¢25,278,029.39 of fees assigned to awardees into the accounts of their institutions.

The process for applying for these scholarships took place online through the GETFund portal, with an astonishing 22,000 students submitting successful applications.

This prompted the GETFund’s Board of Trustees to increase the available slots to accommodate the large number of applicants, resulting in a total of 4,279 recipients.
