Story By: Ahashie Judeliver Eli

UK-based Ghanaian boxer Freezy Macbones has opened up about his extraordinary journey from humble beginnings to the boxing ring. His story is one of resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of his family.

The hope of the average Ghanaian youth striving through the hardship in the country and providing for the family churns through the act of survival and Freezy Macbones exudes just that. Having dazzled through the popular Kejetia market selling thrift shoes, he fought his way to securing a visa to the UK and shortly registered his name in Ghana’s boxing radar as the country’s next top gem.

Freezy Macbones, whose real name is Seth Gyimah, revealed that, like every migrant, he faced numerous challenges in the beginning having relocated from Ghana to the UK. He strived to balance his passion for boxing with his job as a chef – a tough period, that required sacrifices to pursue his dreams.

Before stepping into the boxing arena, Freezy Macbones had quite an eclectic career path. He honed his entrepreneurial skills having sold thrift wear at Kejetia in Kumasi, Ghana. Later, he ventured into selling timbers and even tried his hand in masonry. According to him these experiences instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance.

The turning point in Freezy’s life came when he watched the legendary bout between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. He vividly recalls, “I was triggered when I saw the fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao; that was when I felt I wanted to be a boxer.” This moment of inspiration fueled his determination to pursue a career in boxing.

He then decided to start his boxing practice at a local gym in the UK and rose to prominence following a decisive victory over Darryl Sharp – his first official bout at the Copper Boxing Arena in London this past April.

Notably, he demonstrated his prowess on a grander scale during the Joe Joyce vs. Zhilei Zhang main event. Taking part in a preliminary bout, he exhibited remarkable skills and determination, ultimately securing a unanimous decision from the judges.

Throughout his journey, Freezy Macbones emphasized the pivotal role his family has played in his life. “Family is the reason I keep going on,” he expressed with gratitude. Their unwavering support and encouragement have been his driving force, motivating him to push through even the toughest of times.

In a riveting and exclusive interview on Happy FM with Ohene Bampoe Brenya, when asked about his boxing idols, Freezy Macbones didn’t hesitate to name Mike Tyson as his greatest role model. Tyson’s ferocity in the ring and his ability to overcome obstacles resonated deeply with the Ghanaian boxer.

With his sights firmly set on the Olympic Games qualifiers in Paris next year, Freezy Mcbones aims to not only qualify but also be an inspiration to the next generation of boxers.

He is currently training rigorously at the camp of the National Boxing Team, at their residential camping base, Trust Sports Emporium, Korle-Gonno, Accra.

Freezy Macbones’ story is a testament to the power of dreams, hard work, and the support of loved ones. From selling shoes in Kejetia to pursuing his passion for boxing, he has shown that with determination, anyone can rise from humble beginnings to achieve greatness in the ring.
