Former Vice President of the Ghana Football Association, George Afriyie, who is also contender in the Association’s (GFA) elections, has been disqualified by the Elections Committee.
Afriyie has a limited window of 3 days to appeal this decision.
The decision was made following the completion of the first phase of the vetting process, which involved both incumbent FA boss Kurt E.S Okraku and Afriyie.
The Vetting Committee cited that Afriyie’s application was unsuccessful due to his breach of “Article 13(2)(j) of the Ghana Football Association statutes, 2019,” as well as his “failure to provide the required number of Ghana Football Association members to support your candidature.”
However, the Elections Committee has now suspended all election processes in response to a court injunction obtained by King Faisal, a club relegated from the 2022/23 Ghana Premier League.
King Faisal’s injunction reportedly stems from a desire for a bottom-up approach to the elections, advocating for the election of district-level leaders before top officials are chosen.
The GFA’s electoral landscape is now in turmoil, with all eyes on Afriyie’s potential appeal and the future of the elections.
