Story By: Ahashie Judeliver Eli

Renowned sports journalist and coach, Christopher Nimley, has made a bold declaration ahead of Ghana’s crucial clash against the Central African Republic (CAR) in the final round of qualifiers for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Nimley, in an interview on Happy FM’s Happy Sports, expressed his strong opinion on the choice of goalkeepers for the Black Stars, stating, “If Richard Ofori is fit and has a good form of run, preferably, he should be in the goalpost for the Black Stars because of his ability to command his defense line, that is one thing I feel Ati-Zigi lacks.”

This statement from Nimley has ignited a debate among football enthusiasts and fans across the nation as Ghana’s head coach, Chris Hughton, faces a pivotal decision in selecting his starting lineup for the all-important encounter.

Richard Ofori’s return to the national squad was highly anticipated. The South Africa-based goalkeeper has not represented Ghana since September 27, 2022, when the Black Stars secured a 1-0 victory against Nicaragua in a pre-World Cup friendly in Lorca, Spain.

With Ofori’s potential comeback, Coach Nimley’s assertion holds weight, as the experienced shot-stopper has consistently proven himself as a reliable presence between the posts for Ghana. His ability to command the defense and make crucial saves could be pivotal in securing victory against CAR.

Coach Christopher Nimley further emphasized the significance of this upcoming match, stating, “Chris Hughton should be ready to field his strongest starting eleven against CAR. This is a game Ghana can’t afford to lose, and the atmosphere in Kumasi is going to be electrifying, so we do not even want a draw.”

Indeed, the stakes are high in Group E, as three countries are locked in a fierce battle for qualification to the 2023 AFCON. Ghana currently leads the pack with 9 points, followed closely by Angola with 8 points. The Central African Republic is in third place with 7 points.

The entire nation eagerly awaits what promises to be a thrilling encounter in Kumasi on Thursday, September 7, as Ghana seeks to secure their spot in the 2023 AFCON.
