President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of Ghana has called upon the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Parliament to take decisive action by proposing measures to combat the escalating insecurity and coup attempts in the West African region.

Addressing attendees at the 2nd ECOWAS Parliamentary Seminar held in Winneba, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the urgency of addressing the root causes of military insurrections and political instability. He stressed that it is essential for the entire African continent to uphold its democratic values and prevent any regression.

“Brainstorming on all these major challenges that I have just outlined in the search for solutions to the political insecurity crisis facing our region is the imperative mission of this seminar. One of the expected outcomes is to help us understand even better the root causes of democratic regression and political instability in the region in order to better address them,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

The President highlighted the importance of preserving peace and stability within the ECOWAS bloc and called upon the ECOWAS Parliament to propose concrete measures to uphold democratic and republican values, both among political elites and citizens. He assured attendees that the heads of state and governments of ECOWAS would be receptive to their proposals and eagerly await their recommendations.

The West African region has recently witnessed a surge in insecurity and coup attempts, posing significant threats to the stability of democracies within the ECOWAS community.
