The Parliamentary Committee established to investigate the leaked tape involving an alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare has announced the suspension of its proceedings indefinitely.

The Committee, chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea, made this decision after a recent sitting, during which they received a fresh set of evidence presented by the legal team of retired COP George Alex Mensah.

Addressing journalists after the sitting on Wednesday, Samuel Atta Akyea explained, “There was written evidence that we will look at, and it came from COP retired George Alex Mensah. He has additional evidence, so he released it to the committee. The matters are coming to a head, and we afforded the witnesses the opportunity to say whether they have any additional matters they want to look at. What we have garnered so far, we want to retire and look at it, and then we could start writing our report.”

This suspension comes in the wake of accusations from the legal representatives of IGP Dampare, claiming that the Committee was overstepping its mandate and treating the IGP unfairly.

However, Samuel Atta Akyea firmly refuted these allegations, asserting that the Committee had not demonstrated bias against the IGP and had stayed within its jurisdiction.

The leaked tape in question has been the centre of heated discussions and debates. Bugri Naabu, one of the key figures, had previously confirmed to the Committee that the tape was genuine.

The tape includes a conversation involving Bugri Naabu and three senior Police Officers – retired COP Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and Superintendent Emmanuel Eric Gyebi – allegedly plotting the removal of the IGP to aid the NPP in rigging the 2024 elections.

The decision to suspend the Committee’s proceedings has added further intrigue to an already complex and controversial investigation, leaving the public eagerly awaiting the outcome of their findings and the fate of those involved in the leaked tape scandal.
