Match Preview: Ghana aims to break winless streak against Mexico in friendly clash

In an exciting international friendly set to take place in the United States, the Black Stars of Ghana are determined to secure their first-ever victory against Mexico. This marks their fourth encounter, with previous bouts seeing the North American nation emerge victorious in all three matches.

Two of these face-offs occurred on American soil, while the third took place in England. The initial meeting transpired in 2006 in Texas as a pre-World Cup friendly, ending with a 1-0 win for Mexico, courtesy of Guillermo Franco’s lone goal.

Two years later, the countries renewed their rivalry in another international friendly at Craven Cottage, the home ground of English Premier League side Fulham. Michael Essien opened the scoring for Ghana in the 55th minute, but a late comeback from El Tri, highlighted by Pavel Pardo and Carlos Salcido’s goals, clinched victory for Mexico.

Their most recent clash in 2017, held in Houston, once again saw Mexico triumph with a single goal from Elías Hernández.

Today’s match holds significance as a preparatory game for both teams, with Ghana initiating their 2026 World Cup qualifiers next month and Mexico participating in COPA America qualifiers. Ghana’s coach, Chris Hughton, aims to address certain team challenges, particularly in terms of scoring early goals, stating, “There are areas of our game that we can improve; perhaps scoring goals early enough in games to take pressure off ourselves is one area we are seriously working on.”

The game is notable for the reunion of West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus and Edson Álvarez as they face each other as opponents. Kudus, who has shone brightly for Ghana recently, will play a crucial role in the match. Despite the absence of captain Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew and Arsenal’s Thomas Partey bring valuable experience to the Black Stars.

Ghana’s defense will need to be on guard against Fulham striker Raúl Jiménez, who poses a considerable threat. The showdown is set to unfold at the Bank of America Stadium in North Carolina in the early hours of Sunday morning.
