The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called for the immediate resignation of Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame, alleging his failure to prosecute individuals implicated in Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng’s report on illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” in the country.

The NDC’s demand comes on the heels of a statement from the Attorney-General’s Department asserting that the allegations put forth in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s report lack substantiation and do not provide sufficient evidence to initiate legal action against the individuals named in the document.

The Attorney-General’s statement followed a review of a police docket regarding the claims made in Prof. Frimpong-Boateng’s comprehensive 36-page report, titled “Report on the work of IMCIM so far and the way forward.”

Addressing the press during the “Moment of Truth Series” at the NDC Headquarters in Accra, the National Communications Officer for the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, also urged the Office of the Special Prosecutor to launch an in-depth investigation into the matter.

Sammy Gyamfi said, “The NDC hereby demands the immediate resignation of the Attorney-General for his dubious attempt to cover up serious crimes that have been perpetrated against the state by corrupt government and NPP officials who are destroying our water bodies and forests through illegal mining.”

He emphasized, “More importantly, we wish to call on the Special Prosecutor, Mr. Kissi Adjabeng, to expedite his investigations into this matter and to immediately prosecute all those found culpable.”

The NDC’s call for the Attorney General’s resignation and its plea for further investigations into the allegations of illegal mining is expected to intensify the ongoing discourse about galamsey in Ghana, with a focus on accountability for government officials accused of involvement

The Attorney General is set to give a response to the NDC’s demand for his resignation at the time of this report.
