Ghana Premier League giants, Hearts of Oak, found themselves embroiled in controversy when their former coach, Martin Koopman, made allegations about the board’s interference in player selection. However, the board wasted no time in refuting these claims and asserting their full control over the process.

Koopman’s time at Hearts of Oak was marked by disappointing results, leading to his departure from the club. In a bid to explain the team’s underwhelming performance, he suggested that the board had imposed restrictions on certain players, hindering his ability to select the best team.

In response, the board called a press conference on December 4th, 2023, to address Koopman’s claims. They made it clear that the Dutch coach had complete autonomy over player selection and that they had granted him full responsibility for the task.

“He was solely in charge of player selection in the team. He was given full responsibility,” the board declared, dismissing any notion of interference.

To provide evidence for their assertion, the board revealed that by the seventh league match, Koopman had already utilized 28 players, with only two players sidelined due to injuries. This statement aimed to debunk any speculation about the board’s meddling in the coach’s decisions regarding the team’s composition.

With Koopman out of the picture, Abdul Bashiru has taken over as the interim manager of Hearts of Oak. The club is actively searching for a substantive coach to lead them forward.

Currently, Hearts of Oak find themselves in the 9th position on the league table with 16 points after 13 games. The upcoming league fixture against their arch-rivals, Asante Kotoko, is anticipated to be a crucial encounter for both teams. Both sides are eager to secure a victory and improve their standing in the league.

As the controversy surrounding player selection settles, Hearts of Oak will look to regain their footing and focus on delivering strong performances on the pitch. The board’s firm response to Koopman’s allegations aims to restore confidence in their management and reaffirm their commitment to the success of the team.
