Host of Happy98.9FM’s flagship program, Happy Morning Show, Kwadwo Sefah-Danquah has said that individuals beyond the age of 65 years should be barred by the Constitution from contesting the presidency.
This assertion has sparked discussions on the relevance of age limit in political leadership. His comments come on the back of a video going viral on social media showing Nigerian President, Bola Tinibu delivering his speech at the just ended COP28.
During a broadcast on the Happy Morning Show, Sefah-Danquah shared his perspective on the matter, stating, “No individual after 65 years should be allowed to be president. Nobody should argue about their maturity and experience. I am not disrespecting the elderly or those up to 62, 63 and 64, what I’m trying to say is that there are certain jobs that need every single part of you.”
He added that competence and experience are important in leadership just as physical strength and alertness. He argued that some elderly people may remain effective irrespective of their age but, ”After 62,63,64,65 to 70 years, you lose strength within your body and being alert and optimal at certain levels also comes in. We have had cases in this country where a leader told us he was old and forgetful, so age does matter” he argued.
Chapter 8, Article 62 of the 1992 Constitution states that a person shall not be qualified for election as the President of Ghana unless he is a citizen of Ghana by birth and attained the age of forty years.
