Ghanaian legend Wilberforce Afum has called on the Ghana Football Association(GFA) and coach Chris Hughton to prioritize the inclusion of local players in the squad for the upcoming 2023 AFCON in Cote D’Ivoire.

Isn’t this beautiful? 😍 Look at the way our Gallant Heroes announced their presence as we honor them

During a heartfelt moment at Happy FM’s ‘Celebrating Our Heroes’ initiative, dedicated to honoring the 1963 Black Stars squad that secured Ghana’s first AFCON trophy, Afum in a passionate plea expressed his concern about player commitment. He stressed, “Players who are not ready to kill themselves for the Nation should not be selected.”

Afum’s call for local talent to be given a chance resonates deeply as he highlighted the rich pool of talent within Ghana’s local league, specifically mentioning renowned teams like Hearts of Oak, Asante Kotoko, and Aduana and other local teams.

The 1963 AFCON winner emphasized the need for a comprehensive plan from the GFA and Ministry to rejuvenate and make the local league more enticing.

Dodoo Ankrah, Afum’s colleague and fellow hero from the 1963 squad, echoed these sentiments, urging Coach Chris Hughton to carefully choose players for the AFCON, emphasizing the importance of selecting the right personnel.

This call for change and emphasis on local talent holds special significance as it aligns with Happy FM’s initiative, commemorating the 60th anniversary of Ghana’s historic 1963 AFCON triumph.

During the event, surviving players from the 1963 squad were honored, including Dodoo Ankrah, Kofi Pare, Wilberforce Mfum, Leonard Acquah, and Anum Okai.

The anniversary not only marks a defining moment in Ghana’s football legacy but also serves as inspiration for future generations.
