Samuel Atta Akyea, the Chairman of the committee tasked with investigating the leaked tape involving an alleged plot to oust the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has provided insights into the delay in submitting the final report.

Contrary to rumours circulating in the public, Atta Akyea emphasized that the committee is yet to finalize its report and urged the public to disregard speculations about its submission to the presidency.

“A lot of things have happened, and we don’t want to come and give excuses for why we are late in bringing the report. It is just about to be concluded, and then the committee will converge to look at it and ensure an understanding that nobody has been shortchanged before putting it before plenary,” Atta Akyea explained.

He further pointed out that other parliamentary engagements and the committee’s commitment to ensuring fairness have contributed to the delay. Atta Akyea assured that once these obstacles are overcome, the comprehensive report will be presented before the plenary for review.

“I do not know how anybody will say that the report is with the president—a report that the committee has not even reviewed,” he added.

Addressing concerns about potential national security breaches during the investigation, Atta Akyea clarified that the delay is unrelated to such issues.

He highlighted that the committee conducted an in-camera hearing, allowing them to distinguish between sensitive and non-sensitive information.

“There are no national security considerations at all because, at the end of the day, we had an in-camera hearing. We were able to distinguish what was important and what was not,” he said.

The leaked tape, which emerged in July 2023, contained alleged plans by the government to remove IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare from office in a purported attempt to manipulate the upcoming December general elections.

Following the revelation, a seven-member committee chaired by Samuel Atta Akyea was established to thoroughly probe the contents of the tape.
