John Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer and former president, has publicly declared his opposition to LGBTQ+ activities, citing his religious beliefs as the driving force behind his stance.

John Mahama, a member of the Assemblies of God Church, in a recent address to Zongo chiefs, expressed strong disapproval of homosexuality, emphasizing that his faith condemns such acts.

During the address, Mahama made it clear that his opposition aligns with his religious convictions, stating, “I am against LGBTQ. I am a member of the Assemblies of God Church, and my faith is against it. The faith I have does not allow a man to marry a man and a woman to marry a woman.”

However, he noted that the Anti-LGBTQ+ bill, currently under consideration in Parliament, may not be signed into law by President Akufo-Addo.

On a separate note, Ningo-Prampram MP, Sam George, has urged Ghana’s Parliament to stand firm on the issue and resist external pressures, particularly in response to warnings from Virginia Palmer, the US Ambassador to Ghana.

In a media interview, Sam George emphasized the importance of upholding Ghanaian values and belief systems, stating, “It is high time Ghanaians begin to realize that the way we sell ourselves is how we will be bought.”

He emphasized the need for Ghanaians to preserve their cultural identity and principles, stating, “This is a sovereign nation, and if you tell the Ghanaian people that our culture frowns on this (LGBTQ) but because of a few thousand or million dollars worth of investment that is not even proven will come, you push it aside, Ghana will be seen as the country that does not have integrity.”
