Vice President Bawumia launches “Tap & Go” transport initiative, aims to formalize informal transport services and curb corruption

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched the “Tap & Go” transport initiative, a move aimed at modernizing Ghana’s transport sector and enhancing efficiency.

The initiative launched today, February 19 at the Head Office of Metro Mass Transit Limited is part of the government’s commitment to digitalizing the Ghanaian economy. The initiative is also set to revolutionize the way people pay for and access public transport.

According to Dr. Bawumia, the “Tap & Go” Transport Initiative introduces a well-structured and tested technology that seeks to formalize the informal transport sector and bring about stability in transport fares across the country.

He highlighted the success of the Tap & Go system in plugging revenue leaks, citing Metro Mass Transit Limited’s experience where revenue increased despite operating fewer buses.

“The tap-and-go system has proven to be effective in curbing revenue losses and promoting transparency within the transport sector,” stated Vice President Bawumia. “With this initiative, we aim to build a single system for the entire transport ecosystem, enhancing efficiency and ensuring fair and accurate fare collection.”

The Minister for Roads and Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah also lauded the initiative, emphasizing its significance in improving the reliability and accessibility of public transportation for passengers.

“Each bus has been equipped with a comprehensive manifest system, ensuring the security of passengers and enabling swift response from security agencies when needed,” he added

The Tap & Go Transport Initiative is poised to transform Ghana’s transport sector, paving the way for a more efficient, transparent, and digitally-driven economy.
