Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, the longstanding Majority leader and Member of Parliament for Suame Constituency in the Ashanti Region, has formally relinquished his position as the leader of the Majority Caucus in Parliament.

This paves way for Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Deputy Majority Leader and MP for Efutu, to step into the leadership position.

Sources within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hierarchy have confirmed that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu voluntarily offered to step down during a crucial meeting of the NPP caucus in Parliament, attended by key figures including President Akufo-Addo.

This development comes in the wake of tensions between the caucus and the executive branch, triggered by discussions about reshuffling the leadership of the majority caucus.

The news sparked protests from notable figures such as First Deputy Speaker Joe Osei-Owusu and others, who expressed their staunch opposition to any changes imposed by the party leadership. They voiced satisfaction with the current leadership under Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu.

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin, also weighed in on the matter, emphasizing the importance of party involvement in appointing caucus leaders. He stressed the need for parties with representation in Parliament to have a significant role in selecting their leaders, stating, “A party that has given you the platform to come to this House… must lead that process.”

The NPP National Council will be updated on this development during its next meeting on Friday
