The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre convened Diplomats, Political Leaders, State Economic and Development experts, and security officials for the launch of the 2024 edition of the Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum.

The two day forum which themed, “Migration and Societal Resilience in a Multipolar World Order: Addressing Conflicts and Building Peace in Africa,”, marked its third edition, aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation on pressing issues of migration and security facing the continent.

Hosted by Major General Richard Addo Gyane, Commandant of KAIPTC, the event commenced with a warm welcome address, setting the stage for a series of insightful discussions. Notable speakers, including H.E. Kyrre Holm, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Cooperation at the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Accra, praised KAIPTC’s pivotal role in facilitating peacekeeping efforts across Africa and internationally.

Echoing similar sentiments, H.E. Ms. Sivine Jansen, Deputy Head of Mission at the German Embassy in Accra, underscored Germany’s commitment to mitigating conflict impacts in Africa through initiatives promoting smooth migration and development.

Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel, H.E. Leonardo Santos Simão, lauded Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s efforts in regional peace and stability while emphasizing the need for strategic responses to evolving migration patterns.

Commissioner Silver Ojakol and Amb. Dr. Abdel-Fatau Mensah, representing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Secretariat, outlined actionable strategies to address migration-related threats and enhance social cohesion across the continent.

Guest Speaker, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo highlighted the complexity of migration issues and the imperative for comprehensive analysis to unlock its potential benefits while mitigating adverse effects. Emphasizing the critical role of all stakeholders, he called for concerted efforts to harness migration’s positive impacts while safeguarding essential human resources vital for national development. He requested that deliberations may initiate talks on a number of topics some of which include, forms of possible global corporations that create systems to harness the benefits of migration and the threats of population movement toward security.

The Kofi Annan Peace and Security Forum 2024 has been set as a platform for robust discourse and collaboration among key stakeholders, reaffirming the collective commitment to addressing migration challenges and promoting peace and resilience in Africa. As participants deliberate on the forum’s insights and recommendations, lift hopes in paving the way for informed policies and actions to navigate the complexities of migration and build a more prosperous, secure future for the continent.
