Moses Foh-Amoaning, Executive Secretary of the National Coalition for Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, anticipates President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s endorsement of the newly passed anti-LGBTQ+ legislation.

Passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, the bill prohibits LGBTQ activities and deems their promotion, advocacy, and funding as criminal offenses.

Those convicted could face imprisonment ranging from six months to three years, with promoters and sponsors potentially facing three to five years behind bars.

The approval of the Bill has sparked backlash from various stakeholders, among them Virginia Evelyn Palmer, the Ambassador of the United States to Ghana.

Foh-Amoaning emphasized the potential political ramifications if the President declines to endorse the Bill, cautioning that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) could leverage it for electoral advantage in the 2024 general elections.

“Well, the President is a very smart politician and what I’ve told everybody who asked me this question is, first of all, there’s no President who has ascended the presidency of Ghana who has used the word of God more than this President. So, the point I’m trying to make is, with all that I know about the President, I know he will sign this bill. If he refuses to sign, it would be very easy for the NDC, [they] will just package the NPP as Trumu Trumu party,” he stated in an interview.

He restated his dedication to preserving Ghanaian family values and vowed to challenge opponents of the anti-gay bill in court.
