Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched the Ghana Card Number at Birth system.

The Ghana Card Number at Birth system stands as an enhanced phase of the Births and Deaths and Burial Ordinace introduced in 1912, which marked the beginning of structured birth in Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia speaking at the launch held at the Ga North Municipal Hospital, intimated that the initiative is established to integrate and enhance Ghana’s national identity system. He added that this is a big step in bringing digitalization to Ghana.

He indicated that the absence of integration between records and an efficient identification system hindered the delivery of efficient public social services, exposing Ghana to other vulnerabilities. “The absence of a unique identification system posed significant risks it made all of us vulnerable to fraud, inefficiency in public service delivery, challenges in implementing social programs, electoral discrepancies, and threats to national security.” he explained.

The government of Ghana as of today in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service, National Identification Authority, National Health Insurance Authority, alGhana Statistical Service and other supportive bodies have now integrated these systems in ensuring that every child born in Ghana is immediately provided with a unique number to mark their identity.
