Parliament is set to deliberate on the Property Rights Spouses Bill 2024, a move expected to enhance marital equity and property rights.

Spearheaded by Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare, Member of Parliament for Techiman North constituency and Patricia Appiagyei, Member of Parliament for Asokwa constituency, this bill aims to regulate spousal property rights in accordance with Article 22 of the constitution and address related matters.

During a recent stakeholder engagement session, Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare shed light on the bill’s core objectives. She emphasized that once enacted, the bill would ensure spouses have equal access to property acquired jointly during marriage.

Moreover, it proposes equitable distribution of matrimonial property upon the dissolution of marriage, safeguarding the interests of both parties.

Of particular note, the bill acknowledges the significance of inherited properties acquired by spouses, exempting them from mandatory sharing. This provision underscores the importance of preserving familial inheritances while ensuring fair treatment in matters of marital assets.

Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare highlighted the bill’s commitment to protecting the rights of housewives, emphasizing their entitlement to equitable shares of matrimonial assets.

This provision is said to rectify historical imbalances and ensure fair treatment for spouses who have dedicated themselves to homemaking over the course of their marriages.
