The main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has expressed outrage over reports that the Akufo-Addo-led government is set to recommission the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant (K1TPP). This is believed to be a rebranding of the Ameri power plants procured under the previous NDC administration.

John Abdulai Jinapor, the Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament and MP for the Yapei-Kusawgu constituency has lambasted the government’s move. He stated that the NDC will no longer tolerate attempts to rename projects commissioned under former President John Dramani Mahama.

According to Jinapor, the Ameri power plants, made up of 10 units with a total capacity of 250 megawatts each, were procured between 2013 and 2015 during the Mahama administration.

He accused the current government of merely relocating the units to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region and now planning to recommission them under a new name on April 17, 2024.

“This attempt to appropriate achievements of President Mahama and present them as that of this non-performing government will no longer be countenanced,” Jinapor stated.

The NDC MP further explained that the Ameri power plants are modular and versatile, allowing for flexibility in power generation even with limited gas supply, a key feature that has been crucial in addressing Ghana’s energy challenges.

However, the government is yet to respond to the NDC’s accusations. Stay connected on happyghana.com as we await the outcome of the planned recommissioning of the Kumasi 1 Thermal Power Plant.
