Ghana’s leading radio station, Happy 98.9 FM, is gearing up to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd. This year’s theme, “A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental crisis,” underscores the importance of a free press in tackling environmental challenges.

In line with the theme, Happy FM plans a lineup of activities to commemorate the day ranging from Twitter Space discussions focused on how journalism can address environmental and economic issues.

Additionally, a special short radio documentary will be aired, highlighting the crucial role the press plays in Ghana’s upcoming 2024 election. The documentary will also engage listeners on their expectations of the media during the electoral process.

“We stand in solidarity with journalists around the world who risk their lives every day to bring us the news and stories that matter,” said Kwabena Ampong. “We appreciate their continuous passion and hard work. In an era of misinformation and disinformation, it is more vital than ever to defend the right to freedom of expression and access to information.”

Kwabena Ampong, Happy FM’s Programmes Manager, emphasized the significance of the day and the values upheld by journalists of Global Media Alliance, Happy FM’s parent company.

He expressed solidarity with journalists worldwide who risk their lives to deliver vital news and stories. Ampong stressed the importance of defending press freedom and access to information, especially in an era of misinformation.

Happy FM’s initiatives promise to celebrate journalism and press freedom while honouring journalists dedicated to truth and democracy.
