Okyenhene Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, the Paramount Chief of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, has emphasized the need for decentralization in Ghana’s health system to enhance healthcare delivery.

He believes that decentralization would empower health institutions to make decisions that benefit ordinary citizens, leading to improved healthcare quality. The chief stressed that decentralization is crucial for achieving sustainable development goals and urged a shift away from centralized governance.

He made these remarks during a visit from Dr. DaCosta Aboagye, the newly appointed Chief Executive of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), as part of his Eastern Region tour.

Dr. Aboagye reiterated the need to champion the institutionalization of travel medical insurance in Ghana; providing access to healthcare for diasporans who have for many years made Ghana their preferred holiday destination, especially after the introduction of the year of return and the beyond-the-return policy.
