The National Labour Commission(NLC) has directed the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission(FWSC) to resume negotiations with Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union(MELPWU) on May 21.

The meeting, which follows an invitation to MELPWU leadership, the Ministries of Health and Finance, will take place at the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations, marking a resumption of Conditions of Service talks.

To prevent a nationwide strike, the Labour Commission ordered the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to resume and finalize negotiations with the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU).
The FWSC’s Director of Grievance and Negotiations, Professor Charles A. Oppong, has scheduled the meeting for May 21, 2024, as stated in their invitation letter.

The prolonged delay in resuming negotiations prompted the Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union(MELPWU) to plan a strike on Monday, following a 20-day ultimatum issued on May 1st.

However, the Labour Commission intervened, holding meetings with both parties, and subsequently directed the FWSC to resume negotiations with the union by May 30th, potentially resolving the outstanding issues and averting the industrial action.
