The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) has announced a partnership with German-based Sports20 and Soccer Africa for the introduction of green football.

This move, according to GHALCA boss Kudjoe Fiano will serve as an alternative means for the clubs to make revenue while joining the fight against climate change.

According to GHALCA, Ghanaian clubs will now join the world’s largest climate-football campaign which mobilizes fans, clubs, leagues and stakeholders to take action on climate.

Kudjoe Fiano told the media at a press briefing that a green league will be organized for the Premier League and Division One League (both men and female) where clubs will be awarded marks on how they dispose of their waste and it will come with financial incentives/rewards.

“Green football is a way for the clubs to make additional revenue while also contributing their quota to the fight against climate change. Today the league we are playing doesn’t even have a sponsor and we know the clubs need money, hence the need for this partnership.”

“So we will start green football very soon and after we have announced the modalities. The goal is for all of our clubs to be climate conscious by 2035,” the GHALCA boss said.

Stefan Wagner founder Sports20 said the game has the capacity to contribute immensely to the fight against climate change and sustainability.

“This is a long process but we have to start it because if we succeed here, it will be a blueprint for a lot of sports to also follow and we can say we are very proud to have joined this partnership. Sports20 is related to the G-20 summit,” Stefan Wagner said.
