The Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has stated that the closed fishing season is a key measure for regenerating and sustainably managing Ghana’s rapidly depleting fish stock.

In a recent Facebook post, the Minister shared details of her ongoing stakeholder engagements with fisherfolk in the Greater Accra Region. These discussions she stated are part of preparations for the upcoming 2024 Closed Fishing Season.

The Minister noted that there is a strong consensus among fisherfolk in Greater Accra, similar to their counterparts in the Central and Western Regions, recognizing the vital role the closed fishing season plays in sustaining their livelihoods.

“One key area of consensus amongst the fisherfolk, just like their colleagues in the Central and Western Regions, is how important the closed fishing season is in sustaining their livelihoods,” Minister Hawa Koomson stated.

This annual conservation measure aims to address overfishing and illegal fishing practices, ensuring the future viability of the industry and the communities that depend on it.
