President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has emphasized need for African Countries to fortify democratic foundations, fostering inclusive decision-making, accountability, and citizen participation in governance

In a meeting with the leadership of the Democrat Union of Africa (DUA) at the Jubilee House in Accra, President Akufo-Addo emphasized that military interventions and regimes are not the answer to Africa’s challenges. He echoed the Union’s conviction that the continent can only realize its true potential by embracing the principles of genuine democracy and upholding and protecting human rights.

The Democrat Union of Africa (DUA) advocates for the free market and individual entrepreneurship as essential drivers of economic growth in Africa, prioritizing the creation of inclusive societies where justice reigns, diverse voices are heard, and opportunities abound.

During the meeting, President Akufo-Addo voiced his concern about the alarming rise of military coups, terrorism, and violent extremism in the subregion, particularly in Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, where democratically elected governments have been toppled.

The United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) drew attention to a pressing concern in the region, highlighting the plight of millions of children denied access to education due to widespread school closures caused by instability. This stark reality was underscored in the Secretary-General’s latest report, which shed light on the devastating impact of conflict on the educational prospects of countless young people in West Africa and the Sahel.

UNOWAS emphasized the urgent need for reliable, consistent, and long-term funding to support regional security efforts in the Sahel, citing the alarming escalation of insecurity in the region. The organization stressed that adequate resources are crucial to effectively address the complex security challenges facing the Sahel, and to prevent further destabilization.
