Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida has publicly shared his plans to step down as a result of citizens’ pressure and disappointment in the mishandling of Japan’s economy and rising costs of living.
The Liberal Democratic Party leader, while making this announcement cited a need for the LDP to regain public trust and move forward with political reform. The party which controls both houses of Japan’s parliament has a key influence on who is appointed prime minister of the East Asian country.
Kishida, according to news sources, made this known at a press conference held to inform the public about his decision not to seek re-election in the LDP.
The Prime Minister’s resignation triggers a leadership contest within the LDP, making the winner a guaranteed and well assured Prime Minister of Japan.
Reports project key contenders to be former Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Foreign Minister, Yoko Kamikawa, and Digital Minister, Taro Kono.
